🏺 About the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) – A New Era of Egyptology

The Grand Egyptian Museum, located just 2 kilometres from the Pyramids of Giza, is the largest archaeological museum in the world, designed to showcase Egypt’s ancient heritage in a state‑of‑the‑art environment. The museum spans 120,000 square metres and houses more than 100,000 artifacts, including the complete collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures. The architectural design itself is spectacular: a monumental glass facade aligned with the Pyramids, a grand staircase lined with colossal statues, and an immersive 12‑hall chronological journey through Egyptian history. The GEM is the culmination of decades of planning and construction, officially inaugurated in phases starting 2024, and it is destined to become Egypt’s premier cultural attraction, surpassing even the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir.

📅 Detailed Itinerary – GEM & Giza Highlights

8:00‑9:00 AM: Hotel Pickup in Cairo or Giza
Your private Egyptologist guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in an air‑conditioned vehicle. Begin your journey to the Grand Egyptian Museum (approx. 20‑30 minutes from central Cairo).
Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) – Main Galleries & Tutankhamun Collection
Arrive at the magnificent Grand Egyptian Museum. Your guide will lead you through the chronological galleries, spanning prehistoric times to the Greco‑Roman period. The undisputed highlight is the complete King Tutankhamun exhibition: see his golden coffinettes, jewelry, chariots, royal thrones, and the iconic golden mask, all displayed in a dedicated hall designed to protect the artifacts. You’ll also marvel at the Grand Staircase, lined with 87 monumental statues, including a massive 11‑metre statue of Ramses II.
Lunch at a Quality Local Restaurant
After the museum, enjoy a delicious lunch at a reputable local restaurant serving authentic Egyptian cuisine – grilled chicken, kofta, rice, salads, and dips. Vegetarian options are available upon request. Lunch is included in the tour price (drinks not included).
Giza Plateau – The Three Pyramids
Drive to the Giza Plateau (less than 10 minutes from GEM). Stand before the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), the largest pyramid ever built. Your guide will explain the construction techniques, purpose, and mysteries surrounding these 4,500‑year‑old tombs. Continue to the Pyramid of Khafre (with its remaining casing stones at the top) and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaure. Enjoy a panoramic photo spot where all three pyramids align perfectly. (Optional: purchase extra ticket to enter the interior of the Great Pyramid – subject to availability.)
The Great Sphinx & Valley Temple of Khafre
Descend to the lower plateau to meet the legendary Great Sphinx, a massive limestone statue with the body of a lion and the face of Pharaoh Khafre. Explore the adjacent Valley Temple of Khafre, where the pharaoh was mummified, and admire the massive granite blocks and alabaster flooring. This area offers incredible photo opportunities.
Optional Camel Ride (extra, payable locally)
For an authentic desert experience, you can take a short camel ride (20‑30 minutes) around the pyramids. Cost approx. $10‑15, negotiable. Or simply take photos with the friendly camels.
Return to Hotel
After a full day of exploration, your private driver will transfer you back to your Cairo or Giza hotel, arriving around 5:00‑6:00 PM.
Insider Tips: Book your GEM tour in advance – the new museum is extremely popular. Wear comfortable shoes (both the museum and Giza involve lots of walking). Bring a light jacket or scarf (museum air‑conditioning is strong). For the best photos at Giza, morning light is ideal – we recommend the morning departure. Camel ride prices are negotiable – agree on a price before the ride. Don't forget to bring a copy of your passport for verification at museum security.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

🏺 Is the Grand Egyptian Museum fully open?
The Grand Egyptian Museum is open in phases. The main galleries, the Grand Staircase, the Hanging Obelisk, and the complete Tutankhamun collection are all open. Some secondary halls remain under preparation. Our tours include all accessible areas – and you will still see over 100,000 artifacts, including the full Tutankhamun treasures that have never been displayed together before.
📅 Can I visit the inside of the Great Pyramid?
Yes, an additional ticket can be purchased on site for approximately $15‑20 per person. Due to limited daily tickets, availability is not guaranteed, especially during high season. The interior passage is narrow, steep, and can be stuffy – not suitable for those with claustrophobia or health issues. Let your guide know if you want to attempt entering.
👕 What should I wear?
Comfortable, light‑weight clothing and sturdy walking shoes. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential for the Giza Plateau. In winter (December‑February), bring a jacket or sweater. The museum is air‑conditioned, so a light cardigan is helpful.
🍽️ Is lunch included? Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes, lunch is included at a reputable local restaurant. Vegetarian options are available; please inform us of any allergies or special requests when booking. Drinks during lunch are not included.
🧑‍🏫 In which languages can I get the guide?
Our standard tours are in English. Guides speaking French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese, and Japanese are available on request – please specify your preferred language when booking.
🚐 Do you pick up from New Cairo / Airport hotels?
Yes, but an additional surcharge of $5‑10 per person may apply for hotels in New Cairo, Heliopolis, or near Cairo Airport. Pickup from downtown Cairo, Zamalek, Dokki, Mohandiseen, and most Giza hotels is included.
🏛️ How long do we spend at the Grand Egyptian Museum?
Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on your pace. This allows sufficient time for the main galleries, the Tutankhamun hall, and the Grand Staircase. You can also stay longer if you wish – just let your guide know.
📸 Can I take photos inside the museum?
Yes, non‑flash photography is generally allowed throughout the Grand Egyptian Museum. Flash photography is prohibited in certain sensitive areas (especially the Tutankhamun galleries). Tripods and professional equipment require a special permit.
♿ Is the Grand Egyptian Museum wheelchair accessible?
Yes, the entire Grand Egyptian Museum is fully wheelchair accessible with ramps, elevators, and wide pathways. The Giza Plateau is more challenging, but some paths have been paved. Please contact us in advance to arrange mobility assistance.
Advance booking strongly recommended – The Grand Egyptian Museum has limited daily visitor caps, and tickets sell out quickly. We recommend booking at least 5‑7 days in advance. Free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before the tour start time.
